Games of the Year 2007

Turkis 2007 has been one of the best years ever for video gamers. Here’s a quick list of the games I’ve enjoyed the most.

Horsie to pointy guy six

ChessBeing a big fan of games on both boards and consoles, I’ve been following closely the latest joint venture of Sony, Hasbro and Wizards of the Coast; The Eye of Judgment. This is basically a tactical card game that can be played using the PlayStation3 to help out with the book-keeping and spicing up the game with battle animations. The result looks very much like the chess-like game seen in Star Wars - parodied so brilliantly somewhere in Season 2 of Fururama. Anyway, here’s some initial impressions of the game.

The worms are back

Dressed To Kill
And better so than ever!

“Sir, yes Sir!”

Once again I’m falling for the temptation to brag about the first time I did this or that as an opening of a blog post. Several years ago I played Worms on any trusty Amiga I could lay my hands on, be it the ones of friends, family members, scout leaders, class mates or my own. The concept was not new - as such; taking turns lobbing weapons influenced by gravity, wind etc. at an opponent inhabiting the same randomly generated landscape as oneself. (I had even made a version on my Casio calculator in high school.) What was new was the humour - in sound and graphics - and the perfectly balanced weapon set Team 17 had implemented, as well as the intuitive and playful way the game played. Brilliant.

“Come on, then!”

Mercury observations

Broken dreamSome days ago I heard the camp Lebanese singer/songwriter Mika’s debut album “Life in Cartoon Motion” (I don’t listen much to the radio…) and thought “Hmmm… Freddie is back…” Today I invested in another returning Mercury; the Meltdown Revolution for Wii. Pas mal du tout !

Nintendo WiiFi Connection and Mario Strikers

Wii(Nintedo begged for this play on words, no?)

Anyway, one of my favourite multinationals starting with N launched their first game for the dear Wii playable on the Internet (if one don’t count the Opera Browser and the Voting Channel, of course) yesterday with the game “Mario Strikers Charged Football”. Not without its share of trouble here in France.

The Legend of Zelda - again!

GameRankingsEight hours into The Legend of Zelda now, and I must say; Wow! Game of the year! With more than 30 hours to go according to Edge. I don’t think I have much to add to the critics around the net, but I can give you my immortalization of an interesting front page of GameRankings from 19th of November.

Wii! (Some early impressions)

TorK WiiPlaying. The first thing I did after unpacking the Wii was to … let it do an update of it’s software. That took forever. At least in subjective time. After that it had to go through another even bigger update. The teasing. Then it was time to start Wii’ing!

Weirdly enough it was not the extremely anticipated new Zelda game that was the first game my console saw, nor the zanily quirky pythonish Rayman contre les Lapins Cretins, but the reasonably quirky WiiSports. After a brief session in the Mii-creator (Homage in flash can be found here.) my brother and I was ready for some not so serious sporting.

“Open or closed gamers?”, that is the question…

Closed or Open“Inspired” by where the debate in the keelwater of my “I’m beginning to see the lite…”-post has gone, I feel the need to define some concepts once and for all (,pompous as it may seem) - or at least give it a healthy try.

Metareview: Electroplankton

ElectroplanktonMy good friend, and composer of contemporary music; Lewis said when I showed him Electroplankton on my DS: “This is the future of music - if we are lucky.” A very fitting reaction indeed. This title by Toshio Iwai is neither a “game” that is not a game, nor an “instrument” that is not a instrument and not really a “music composing tool” that’s not a music composing tool. It’s more in the lines of a composition - an interactive composition. An interactive composition inspired by video games as well as music software and musical instruments.
