A most amusing series of events occurred the other day. While queuing in the grocery store that I tend to frequent the most, I was cut in line by a reasonably shabby looking character talking to his mobile phone about frozen asparagus. The store owner normally strikes down with terrible vengeance on shoppers trying to cut the line on his watch but this time he just shot in that frozen asparagus was not something that could be found in his establishment, whereupon the line cutter, looking like a question mark, showed him a bottle of wine.

Today I woke up to the news that my favourite North American author of all time, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr., was dead. 84 years old.

When I was younger, so much younger than today, around 10 perhaps, I often walked the 2 km back home from school. (That was before everybody bought immense SUVs and the world along narrow winding roads was a safer place, but that’s besides the point.) The walk could take everything from thirty minutes up to several hours. Depending on if and what company I had and if I had something interesting to think about. Sometimes I rushed home even if I had something interesting to think about, because perhaps I had a copy of a game in my rucksack. (I think it was almost legal to copy games from friends in Norway back then.) This made me perform my first philosophical discourse.
With the batteries in the red on the my most used Wiimote I came across this gadget. A good idea. My general battery charger has just too much work these days, so my lazy self uses throwawayable batteries… Akk.
Today I finally got inspired to look more into a formal language that always has been there, but I’ve never bothered to look into it before; Regular Expressions. Oh; joyfull bliss and blissfull joy! Although I’ve programmed my share of parsers, designed my “toy” languages and my favourite text editors (Kate and TextPad) always have teased me with it, I’ve never felt the need (or urge) to look into this matter before. Silly me.

“Inspired” by where the debate in the keelwater of my “I’m beginning to see the lite…”-post has gone, I feel the need to define some concepts once and for all (,pompous as it may seem) - or at least give it a healthy try.

Just a small post to point you to a quite decent Wired-article by the one and only Will Wright. That’s all. For now.
Three weeks ago I finally took the step beyond “knowing the rules” of Go and started the long journey towards understanding the game. This had been my wish for quite a long while, but I needed a little help from a friend to show me how it plays on a real goban and give me insight into some of it’s intricacies. Now I’m reading books and articles on Go, watching an animé on Go, playing Go against the computer as well as real persons online and live. I also see traces of Go while walking around in the world or playing other board games. Scary!

LA Weekly has a fascinating read out on Nintedogs entitled “Nintendogs puts existentialism in the palm of your hand”.
